Each one takes a different route to finished work. Automation follows a set of predefined rules to complete tasks quickly and consistently 1. An AI assistant is an application that understands natural language commands and uses a conversational interface to complete tasks for a user 10, and it acts at your request 2. An AI agent plans and acts on its own toward a defined goal, using the tools and permissions available to it 3.
AI agents and AI assistants share many of the same underlying technologies, but they interact with users, make decisions and complete work in different ways 11. The label "AI agent" now covers everything from simple chatbots to complex self-directed systems 12, so the word on the pricing page tells you little about what the tool actually does. Artificial intelligence supports both everyday tasks and complex business processes 13, and the two categories work well together: agents handle specific or complex tasks on their own, while assistants handle understanding and interacting with people in natural language 14.

Choose the smallest amount that gets the job done. AWS puts agent autonomy on a spectrum from simple scripts to independent systems 4, and you select the appropriate level of independence anywhere from basic LLM chains, which are non-agent solutions following a fixed sequence of AI operations, up to fully autonomous agents 5.
The separation sits in how these systems make decisions 15. Non-agent solutions follow predefined paths even when advanced AI powers them, while true agents can be given a goal and asked to reason and adapt as they go 16. Agents operate with autonomy: they reason, adapt and make decisions based on dynamic inputs 17. Partially autonomous agents work independently toward specified goals and change their tool usage and strategy as circumstances change 18. Your business task determines the training example. Pick a specific piece of work: a quote from one site visit, a reply to one customer question or a weekly update for one property. What does each option remember between jobs?
Less than most people assume. AI assistants can be tailored to a user's needs, but they do not inherently retain information from past interactions 29, and they do not necessarily have persistent memory 30. Some assistants do remember details between conversations, such as preferences or previous requests, and use them to personalise responses 31. The model underneath does not learn or evolve from your usage; it changes only when its developers release a new or retrained version 3233.
Agents hold more. Compared with assistants, agents retain context better and improve their performance over time 34. They remember previous actions, conversations and outcomes, which lets them refine future plans and avoid repeating approaches that failed 35. That mix of memory and adaptability helps them respond to changing goals and environments 36. Even so, the underlying model is not continually retrained 37.
This is why the written instructions matter more than the tool's memory. Retrieval-augmented generation gives an assistant access to current information from trusted documents, databases or an organisation's knowledge base without changing the underlying model 38. Keep the instructions you built and the source material you approved, and the next job starts where the last one finished.
What do agents cost you in speed, spend and oversight?

The AWS Generative AI Innovation Center worked with HERE Technologies, a location and mapping company, on an AI coding assistant that turns natural language into HTML and JavaScript so developers can use the right APIs across the network 39. That team chose a streamlined, sequential AI approach instead of autonomous agents for two reasons: they needed consistent results and quick response times for coding suggestions 40.
Oversight changes with the level too. Assistants suggest actions for you to approve, while agents reason, decide and solve problems independently using external data sets and tools 41. Calling on tools does not by itself make an LLM an agent 42. An assistant can use tools, but only the predefined functions it has been equipped and trained to handle 43. You check the output against the information your business supplied. You need a workflow you can check before its output reaches a customer.
How do you write instructions for the level you chose?
Write five inputs before you paste in anything else. The five inputs are Context, Task, Source, Rules and Output. Context describes the business, customer and situation. Task names the job the AI assistant needs to do. Source supplies the notes, documents or approved facts for that job. Rules set the limits and identify missing information to flag. Output describes the format and information the finished draft needs to contain.
Assistants understand queries submitted by people and return relevant information, suggestions or next-step actions 44. Generative AI lets them understand natural language, generate content and respond flexibly to requests 45, and integration with application programming interfaces extends what they can do 46. None of that decides what your quote should say. Your five inputs do.
Then test it on a safe example and check the result against your source material. Compare names, dates, figures and claims with your source. Recalculate totals. Check that the draft answers the request and stays within your scope. The person responsible for the work approves the final version. We help you build and test a workflow you can use again.
